Tankey – Fuel Discount App

Categories: E-commerce | Travel

Tankey is a Dutch consumer app that gives drivers an instant per-liter discount on fuel at hundreds of affiliated stations across the Netherlands. Instead of stamps, loyalty cards, or after-the-fact rebates, the discount is applied automatically at the pump as soon as the user confirms their pump number in the app. New users receive an immediate 5-cent-per-liter discount on their first fill-up, and additional discounts can be accumulated by shopping at the Tankey network of partner webshops. With roughly 500 participating filling stations nationwide, the app brings together a fuel-loyalty experience that previously required juggling several programs. FusionWorks built the mobile application and the integrations that make the in-pump discount flow work.

Discount at the Pump, Not After the Fact

The Tankey product is built around removing friction from fuel discounts. The app shows the nearest affiliated station and lets the user view all participating stations on a map, so finding a partner pump is a one-tap decision. Additionally, once the driver arrives and confirms the pump number in the app, the discount is activated immediately and the lower price is charged at payment. This real-time mechanism is what differentiates Tankey from points-based loyalty programs that delay the reward.

Stackable Discounts Across a Partner Network

Users do not have to drive more to save more. Tankey lets shoppers stack additional fuel discounts by purchasing through more than 40 affiliated webshops, on top of the standard discount that already applies to every fill-up. Furthermore, the app supports an optional environmental setting where part of the discount funds sustainable energy projects to offset driving emissions. This combination of stacked savings and an opt-in green angle gives the product reach beyond pure price-sensitive drivers.

Map-First Navigation and Station Discovery

Because the value of the discount depends on being at the right station, navigation and station discovery are first-class concerns in the product. The map shows all participating stations across the Netherlands and surfaces the closest one based on the user’s location. Meanwhile, station information is kept up to date so users do not arrive at a partner location only to find that the discount no longer applies. This is what keeps trust in the product high across a network of around 500 stations.

Development and Implementation

FusionWorks built the Tankey mobile application and the supporting client-side logic that ties together station discovery, pump confirmation, and the discount activation flow. Our team focused on a clean, low-friction user experience — drivers should be able to open the app, confirm a pump, and get back to their day — and on the integrations with the station network that make the at-the-pump discount possible. We handled the day-to-day product engineering as the app evolved across its lifetime. Furthermore, our work supported the product’s expansion across the Dutch market and its growing partner webshop ecosystem.

Tankey shows how a focused mobile product can take a category that has historically relied on plastic loyalty cards and replace it with something instant, transparent, and useful at the moment of purchase.
